Over the past five to ten years many of the counselling and psychotherapeutic modalities have cross-fertilized and learned a lot from each other. There have also been many significant developments such as those in the fields of neuroscience, trauma and mindfulness, highlighting new knowledge, which all modalities have needed to embrace. The Brief, Solution-Focused and Narrative therapies have also made a huge contribution to the psychology of possibilities in terms of the importance of optimism, a deeper appreciation of the creative usage of language and a more expansive interpretation of ‘the therapeutic alliance’. There have been countless developments of knowledge and techniques within most modalities, all of which have added to the richness, depth and breadth of resources available to those working in the helping and healing professions.
